Coaches Corner

Welcome to Coaches Corner

Our association policy has always been that if a child wants to play soccer, he or she will play soccer. With the dramatic growth in the valley, this is becoming more difficult.

A lack of coaches will likely force us to limit the number of children we can register each season. Most of the coaching needs are with the younger players. Children in U-5, U-6, and U-8 could be effected by a lack of available coaches. As a parent, if you've thought you might want to coach or help out, TVSA can help.

First, figure out if you have the time to coach a bunch of children learning about soccer. It will take 2-3 hours per week, including Saturday. Then check the Clinic schedule to find out when and where coaching help is available (see below). TVSA has a great number of former players among its volunteer coaches. Between the experienced coaches and the clinics, you'll have a great time, and help introduce soccer to our youngest players.

If you would like more detailed information on coaching, please contact the Director of Coaches at coaches@tvsa.org.

Player Ratings

Player ratings are due by the end of each season (both Spring and Fall seasons). We are making a push to have all coaches submit the ratings for their respective teams by electronic means via the TVSA web site. Ratings are submitted using the team page customization section of the web site. In addition to being able to create and modify the team pages, coaches may also submit and manage ratings for the players on that team. The information entered into this part of the web site is completely private and no one but the Director of Coaches and the Director of the Web Site may access the information.

Please follow the instructions given in Player Ratings tab to complete the rating submission.

Risk Management

TVSA is committed to providing the children in our league a safe soccer experience.  The Risk Management Program is part of this commitment.  All Head Coaches are required to participate in Risk Management.  Assistant Coaches who will run a practice or game in the absence of the Head Coach must participate in Risk Management, but TVSA highly recommends that all Assistant Coaches go through Risk Management.

Returning coaches that registered or renewed their Risk Management since 2004 should have lifetime RM status.  If you have a coaching ID card/badge it should show an expiration date of 1/1/2099.  First time coaches or coaches with expired RM status (certified prior to 2004) will need to register ASAP.  Risk Management is now a one-time process wth no renewals needed.  Also, the registration process is more flexible than in past years.

How to Submit Ratings

In order to begin the process, a coach must log into the team page customization area. Click on the Teams section on the left side of this page (located under Recreational). The page that appears will have an area near the bottom where coaches can click to log in. If the coach does not have an account yet, one must be created at this time. Once the coach has logged in, a new set of choices appear at the top of the menu on the left side of the page. Click on the Ratings link to enter the ratings area.

The first time in the ratings area, the coach will see a blank page stating that "There are no ratings entered for your team at this time. Please use the Add Player button below to enter ratings data." There will be a button that says "Add Player" shown. Press this button to add a player. A blank player rating information screen will appear. Enter in the last and first name of the player followed by their sex and date of birth. The remaining items represent the specific rating categories that the player is to be rated on. This is the most difficult part of the rating process. TVSA has developed a player rating guide to assist in making the right decision on how a player should be rated in a particular area. You can find this guide at the end of this page. It is very important to rate players relative to their entire division and not relative to their own team. Once all ratings have been entered for the player, press the Save Ratings button to save the information. After the information is saved, the list of players submitted thus far is shown. The coach may elect to add more players by pressing the Add Player button and repeating the process for each player on the team. Player information may be modified by pressing the Edit button on the right of the player ratings for a specific player. The Delete button will remove the player from the list.

Once all the ratings are entered, there is nothing left to be done by the coach. TVSA will monitor all coaches to ensure that ratings have been submitted. The ratings will be used in the next Fall season for placement in the draft.

Rules for Coach Requests

TVSA has always had a policy in the Spring seasons that allowed players to request to be placed on a specific coach's team. In the last few season, this convenience has been taken advantage of to create so called stacked teams. This goes against the spirit of the Spring season were the main goal is to stay in shape and have fun. We have been forced to impose new request rules for the Spring season. The rules are as follows:

  • Request rules affect age groups U8 through U18. Age groups below U8 are not affected.
  • Each coach may only be assigned a maximum of three (3) player requests.
  • The child of the coach counts as one player request.
  • Requests for siblings to be placed with a specific coach shall count as a single request.

If there are any questions about this policy, please visit the Contact Us page and leave a message with the league registrar.

Below are various files that are available for coaches to download and use. We will be expanding this area as we acquire more materials for coaches.
